August is here, bringing warmth and sunshine (and some rain in the UK!). It’s a perfect time to focus on your well-being and prepare for your baby’s arrival.

Staying Cool and Comfortable During Pregnancy

  1. Hydration is key: Summer heat can be challenging, especially when pregnant. Drink plenty of water throughout the day. Carry a water bottle and take regular sips. Enjoy water-rich foods like cucumber, watermelon, and strawberries.
  2. Dress for the weather: Choose loose, lightweight clothing made from breathable fabrics like cotton. This will help you stay cool and prevent overheating. Don’t forget a wide-brimmed hat and sunglasses too!
  3. Avoid peak sun hours: Stay indoors or in shaded areas during the hottest part of the day, typically between 11 AM and 3 PM. If you need to be outside, take frequent breaks and seek shade.

Preparing for a Summer Baby: Essentials for Your Newborn

  1. Dress lightly: Use lightweight, breathable clothing for your baby. Natural fabrics like cotton are best for keeping your baby cool.
  2. Sun protection: Babies under six months should be kept out of direct sunlight. Use a stroller shade or a lightweight blanket for protection. For older babies, use a broad-spectrum, baby-safe sunscreen.
  3. Stay cool: Keep your home cool with fans or air conditioning. Make sure your baby’s sleeping area is comfortable and well-ventilated.
  4. Hydration: If breastfeeding, offer more frequent feeds as breast milk helps keep your baby hydrated. For formula-fed babies, ensure they’re getting enough fluids. Consult your midwife, health visitor, or GP if you have concerns.
  5. Safe sleep: Never let your baby sleep in a car seat, pushchair, or carrier for extended periods, especially in hot weather. Ensure they have a flat, safe sleeping space to avoid overheating.
